Wisdom teeth, also known as "third molars," are as important as other teeth but are more prone to problems during the eruption (breaking through the gum tissue). Wisdom teeth are the last to erupt, usually between the ages of 17 and 21, leaving little room in the mouth. As a result, they may erupt sideways, partially or completely, or become trapped (impacted), causing pain, infection, and gum line and facial swelling. If any of these conditions develop, your dentist may decide that an extraction is necessary. The removal of wisdom teeth is a fairly common oral surgery, but the procedure is complicated if the wisdom teeth have not yet erupted. Although some general dentists can remove impacted or un-erupted wisdom teeth, the majority of people require the services of an oral surgeon. Many patients, in fact, prefer to be heavily sedated for the procedure. As a result, dentists have the necessary equipment and skills to sedate or provide general anesthesia to patients.
